To play billiards well it takes a general understanding of the game and a lot of practice to see how the techniques work on the table. While it is a seemingly simple game, there are many techniques and geometric principles involved.

The most basic and important principle of billiards is understanding the angles or diamonds of the table. The angle of incidence is always equal to the angle of reflection, meaning the angle the cue ball hits the target will be the same angle it bounces off and continues in the other direction. The target can be another ball or the rail, but if it is hit straight without spin, this basic geometric principle will apply. To play billiards it is important to practice straight shots, as they are the basics of the game.

Often a straight shot may not be available, or the leave of the cue ball with a straight shot will not set a player up well for the next shot. Fortunately, there are techniques that can help billiards players have better control of over the cue ball through the use of spins and friction.

English is a sidespin applied to the cue ball by hitting the ball to the left or right of center. English will create a change in the direction of the object ball and the cue ball.

A draw shot puts a backwards spin on the cue ball, which is done by hitting the cue ball under the middle. A draw shot will narrow the angle of reflection after impact on the target. It can also slow the rate of the cue ball after impact, which may be required to avoid a scratch or create a better leave.

Playing billiards is more than just hitting balls into the pockets. The skilled billiards players are thinking many shots ahead of themselves and are always preparing for the next shot.
