There are thousands of articles on billiards that are aimed at anyone from a novice to a professional. There are certain articles that promote certain brands of cue sticks, tables or even techniques. The fact remains that every writer, producer and player in billiards has a unique style that cannot be successfully reproduced. Each player must find their own style and pick and choose each piece of information that best matches their own style.
New and relevant information on billiards can be acquired in a few ways. A person can watch the numerous instructional videos that are available, read the many articles and books that are available or head down to the billiards hall and watch the seasoned players. So which method is the best? The best answer is, all of them. A good billiards player studies articles and books much like he studies his opponent or angle alignment. The World Pool-Billiards Association determines which equipment can be used in tournaments throughout the nation and publish its uniformed standards, however these written guideline may not be the best option for recreational billiards players who are trying to find a table that will comfortably fit in their basement. The same is to be said, about which type of pool cue is to be used for certain shots. A certain article may say that the best way to jump the cue ball is to use a shortened jump cue. Another article may rave about the benefits of a jump/break cue for best results. The fact is, if a billiards player gets better results from using a standard cue stick then that’s what should be used.
Most articles on billiards do have universal proven truths. Obviously, the bigger the pocket size, more forgiveness is granted to shots that are a little off then tables with smaller pockets. However, if an article stresses the importance of a particular piece of equipment, don’t rush out and buy it until you feel comfortable that it is the right piece of information for your style of play.
